I came up with the idea for Moose Mischief in 2010 after my husband, Peter, told me an endearing story about befriending a moose when he was a child. Peter grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska and one summer a moose started coming by his house every day around lunchtime to eat crabapples off the tree in his front yard. Realizing this, Peter made himself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and waited for the moose, so they could have lunch together.
Since I had wanted to write a children's book series for some time, I decided to create one about a boy named Cooper and his friend, the moose, who live in Alaska. I began writing and the first story that developed involved Cooper making pancakes for his mom's birthday with the help of a slightly unhelpful moose. I decided to name the series Moose Mischief® because I envision Cooper and the moose getting into lots of mischief!
I wanted to illustrate the book myself, but I did not know how to draw or paint, so I enrolled in art classes at Katie O'Neill's Fine Art Studio in Pacific Palisades. I could not have completed my first book "Moose Mischief: A Pancake Surprise!" without Katie O'Neill's instruction, guidance and encouragement. I am forever grateful to her. I am now in the process of illustrating and writing the second book in the Moose Mischief series.
At the end of September, I will launch a YouTube channel, Moose Mischief®. On the channel, I will teach kids about our amazing world through art, science and craft projects. Since Cooper and the moose live in the beautiful state of Alaska, I will mainly focus the projects on the state's wildlife and natural wonders! New videos will be posted regularly. Kids can look forward to learning how to make glacier gak, a slime forest, fake snow and much more! Please subscribe to my channel once it's launched and follow me on Facebook or Instagram, so you will be notified of new videos.
In addition, be sure to check out my shop, where I am selling Moose Mischief® apparel for people of all ages. Right now, the T-shirts, sweatshirts and baby onesies feature a fun image of Cooper and the moose sledding.
I hope you come on this journey with me! I look forward to sharing all of this with you!
